Teaching and Translating Experience

CHRIS JAMES DOWSON

Teaching experience:

More than 10 years of experience in teaching English as a foreign language. Various long-term roles, including creating and running specialist English courses for adults working in the biological sciences for the CFPPA-Vendôme (face-to-face and distance learning), for schoolchildren from TPS to CM2 in seven schools as part of the Terrecole project, and for researchers and administrators working at the Beauval Nature association (distance learning).

Translating experience:

More than thirteen years of translation experience including commercial, scientific, educational, and communications texts. Many long term clients including one of the most visited tourist destinations in France, the ZooParc de Beauval.

Qualifications and employment:

  • Creation and running of specialised English courses for researchers and administrators working at the Beauval Nature association - 2024 to date

  • Creation and running of specialised English courses at the CFPPA du Loir et Cher, Vendôme for the Brevet Professionnel Technicien Animalier en Unité d'Expérimentation, CQP Soigneur Animalier, and for the course coordinators - 2018 to date

  • Creation and running of English language courses in state primary schools in Genillé, Loché, Villeloin-Coulangé, Orbigny, Nouans-les-Fontaines, Céré la Ronde, and also at the Montessori school in Céré-la-Ronde. Classes included: TPS - CM2 - 2021 to date

  • Translations for the clients listed on the ‘Our clients’ page, including all translations for the ZooParc de Beauval and Association Beauval Nature as a self-employed contractor - 2018 to date

  • Modern foreign language assistant (ALVE) in three schools - 2019

  • Manager of the SPA - Refuge de Luynes - 2016 to 2018

  • Scientific mediator and translator, ZooParc de Beauval - 2011-2016 

  • CELTA Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language - 2010

  • First year of PhD thesis in Evolutionary Biology, studying the reproductive success of red deer - 2009

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSc) with honours in Zoology; Medal of Honour for best results of the year - 2004 to 2008

Background:

Chris is originally from Newcastle, in the North East of England and lived for six years in Scotland whilst studying at the University of Edinburgh.
